How is the scan performed?

The scan will only take around 10 minutes. Nearly all scans after 10 weeks can be done through the tummy. In early pregnancy you would be required to drink several glasses of water beforehand so that the bladder is full. The full bladder then pushes the uterus out of the pelvis to allow the sonographer to get a clear picture of the baby. If the baby is too deep in the pelvis or you are too overweight, a vaginal scan may be necessary as the images might not be clear enough.

Vaginal scans give a much clearer picture of your baby especially in early pregnancy. Vaginal scans work the same way as abdominal ones except the transducer is shaped to fit comfortably within the vagina.

At the end of the scan you will be given a report of the scan which will tell you how many weeks pregnant you are and what your due date would be. This report should be kept with your maternity notes so it is available to anyone who may be involved with your care.

What measurements will be taken at my dating scan?

Your baby will be measured from its head to its bottom. This measurement, known as the crown-rump length (CRL) can be made between 7 to 13 weeks and gives a very accurate gestational age. After 13 weeks the baby can curl up and stretch out, so measuring the length can become less accurate.

Dating using the crown-rump length can be within 3-4 days of the last menstrual period. It is important to note that a due date set using the crown-rump measurement should not be changed by any subsequent scan. If another scan at a later date suggests a new due date that is later than the original date given then this should be treated as the baby not growing at the expected rate, rather than changing the due date.

At 10 weeks the CRL measures 3cm, at 12 weeks the CRL measures 5-6cm and at 13 weeks the CRL measures 7 cm.

After 13 weeks the best way to measure the baby is the width of the head, this is known as the Biparietal Diameter (BPD). The BPD is the diameter between the two sides of the head. This measurement increases from about 2.4cm at 13 weeks to about 9.5cm at full term.

These measurements are then put together with polynomial equations can estimate the weight of the foetus at any gestation with great accuracy. Computer software and look up charts can be used to generate growth analysis charts to plot the growth curve of your baby specifically for your pregnancy.
