Dating Scans

The use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy has been common practice since the late 1960’s. There are many different types of scan used during a pregnancy, each one is used at a different stage of pregnancy. A dating scan is used to accurately date the pregnancy and to calculate the due date of the baby. An anomaly scan is used to detect any abnormalities with the foetus. Ultrasound scans are routinely used throughout pregnancy to monitor foetal development and to look for any abnormalities with the pregnancy.

An ultrasound scan is performed by passing high frequency sound waves through the uterus using a transducer pressing on the tummy. The sound waves bounce off the baby and the returning echoes are translated by the computer. These echoes produce an image on the screen that reveals the baby’s position and movements.  Bone appears white as it is a hard tissue, soft tissues appear grey and fluids appear black. It is the contrast between these three colours that provide the image.

The following things are carried out by ultrasound scan at various stages of pregnancy:

  • determine the number of foetuses
  • determine the site of the pregnancy e.g. detect an extra-uterine pregnancy.
  • determine the cause of any unexplained bleeding
  • check for the presence of a heartbeat
  • a dating scan to accurately date the pregnancy by measuring the baby.
  • a nuchal translucency scan to assess the risk of down syndrome by measuring the fluid at the back of the neck.
  • determine the reason behind an abnormal blood test.
  • diagnose any abnormalities
  • assisting in performing diagnostic tests
  • determination of the location of the placenta and assess the amniotic fluid levels.
